Such A Sad Story…

May 16, 2007

Mainstream media is a funny thing. They choose to cover some stories, but not others. We hear daily about Paris Hilton’s prison sentence and other stories like the Duke Lacrosse case. Most of these stories are interesting and compelling for sure, but so is the following story of which almost nobody has ever heard about.

You probably never read or heard much concerning Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, two students in Knoxville Tennessee. One night after leaving their apartment and driving off in their SUV, they were carjacked and kidnapped by five men. They were taken to one of the men’s houses and both of them were brutally raped and terrorized. Finally, they poured gasoline all over Christopher and burned him alive. Channon, his girlfriend, was later found in five separate trash bags hidden around the house. It is one of the most brutal and vicious crimes ever. There is no known connection between the murderers and the victims. It seems to be a purely random act of violence.

Why didn’t the mainstream press ascend upon Knoxville Tennessee to cover this amazing and horrific story?

There are some pretty compelling opinions. I’m not sure about all of that, but it is definitely thought-provoking…

  1. I don’t get the reasons for why they cover some stories, but not others. But I’m not sure I agree with her theories that it doesn’t fit into a stereotypical racial crime. Just check out the story, Freedom Writers, and you’ll see that the blacks despised the whites just as much as the whites did the blacks. So it very well could have been a racial crime. Why the media didn’t cover it? There’s probably some warped reason, but to be honest, I’m happier not hearing about things like that. Really, does it make anyone feel good to read the stories the media reports??

  2. I agree Cor, it sure seems like a racial “hate” crime to me. But, as the video suggests, I wonder if the press would ignore the story if the races were switched and it was the white people that were doing the murdering…

  3. This makes me sick to my stomach. No comment on Paris, long and short is I think she should go to jail…

  4. That’s really disturbing. Tragic. Graphic. Disturbing. Sadly though, Paris hype stays in the media longer than that story would, and editors know that. That story would stay on the air about 24 hours. Salacious gossip, however, lingers a looooooong time!

  5. I wrote a nice long response to this and then my dsl dumped me! Anyway, I’ll try and make it short this time.
Point 1: if they were black, black activists would be loudly demanding that the media cover this story and in depth.
Point 2: if whites demand racial rights, somehow, we become white extremists..at least it seems that way to me.
Point 3: I belive equality should be just that…and I worrry that somehow white racial rights have become less valuable than that of any other race.
Point 4: The mainstream media is so lop-sided it isn’t even funny anymore. Discerning adults can see this and search for the real news elsewhere. My worry: can the youth of America see that? Do parents take the time to educate their kids so they don’t think what they see on the “boob tube” (

  6. Lynda, your assessment seems quite foreboding. I hope your thesis is not the case, but I agree it very well could be.

My favorite quote: Though we love both the truth and our friends, reverence is due to the truth first.

I suppose it is our responsibility to teach our present (or future) children that they must seek truth in all forms and not fall prey to media and all other influences.
